Obituary - Barbara (Spacek) Svoboda
Dies at Chicago
Mrs. Barbara Svoboda, 79, long time resident of the community north of
Green, died Monday at the home of her son, Ed, at Chicago, after a short
illness. She had been in declining health for some time.
For many years Mrs. Svoboda had made her home north of Green after her
husband died in 1927 but she went to Chicago about a year ago to make her
home with a daughter and son there.
Funeral services will be held at the Peterson-Neill Chapel Friday afternoon
at 2 p. m. and burial will be made in Goshen cemetery.
Mrs. Svoboda is survived by six sons and daughters, besides their families,
and a number of grandchildren. They are Ed of Chicago, Mrs. Nick Mateja of
Berwyn, Ill., Mrs. Lloyd Clark of Green, George of Junction City, Mrs. A. F.
Rigel of Riley and Mrs. L. A. Newell of Clay Center.
Svoboda
Tribute is paid another beloved mother in the passing of Mrs. Barbara
Svoboda, who resided in the Green community many years. However, in recent
years she had visited among her children. For several years she had been
with a daughter in Chicago.
Always a devoted wife and mother, who looked well to the welfare of her
family and home during her active years, her kindliness and friendly spirit
further exemplified her generous heart and good will toward all. Her life
story follows:
Barbara Spacek, daughter of Anthony and Frances Spacek, was born December 3,
1873 in Tabor Czechoslovakia. She passed away following two years of
failing health, in Chicago, December 31, 1951 at the age of 78 years and 28
days.
Her parents were of the Roman Catholic faith, and she was baptized in that
faith in Czechoslovakia. She came to this country at the age of 17 years
and lived in Chicago. In 1894 Barbara Spacek was married to William Svoboda
in Chicago and they came to Kansas to make their home in Green, Kansas where
she lived until 1950. Mrs. Svoboda has spent the last year and a half in
Chicago.
There were nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Svoboda, of whom three have
preceeded their mother in death. They are Henry, who died in infancy; Frank
who died in 1921; and William who died in 1936. Her husband also preceded
her in death December 22nd, 1927, and her three brothers preceded her in
death.
There remain to mourn at her going, her six children, Edith Rigel of Riley,
Kansas; Frances Mateja of Chicago; Bertha Newell of Clay Center; Ella Clark
of Green; George Svoboda of Junction City; and Edward Svoboda of Chicago.
Also 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She leaves one sister Mrs.
Antonia Lippert and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Peterson-Neill Chapel in Clay Center
Friday afternoon, January 4, with Rev. Elmer L. Brooks as the minister of
the First Methodist church officiating. The burial was at the Goshen
Cemetery north of Green.
Mrs. Walter Obenland and Mrs. Bert Sorem, accompanied by Mrs. Elmer Brooks,
sang, "Good Night and Good Morning," and "Beautiful Garden of Prayer."
Burial was made in the Svoboda family plot in the Goshen cemetery north of
Green. The body bearers Frank Erke, James Noyes, Clifford Miles, Ernest
Oetinger, Valjean Brethour, and Joe Lippert.
The presence of relatives and friends and the beautiful flowers bespoke love
and sympathy.
Relatives coming from a distance were Mrs. Nick Mateja and Edward Svoboda of
Chicago; Mr. and Mrs George Svoboda, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parsons of Junction
City; Lola Newell of Topeka; and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Svoboda of Indianapolis,
Ind.
