OBITUARY
BERTHA E. NEWELL
Bertha E. Newell was born August 21, 1904 at Green, Ks., the daughter of William and Barbara (Spacek) Swoboda. She died Thursday, October 28, 1993 at Medicalodge of Clay Center. She was 89 years old.

Over the years she was employed at Swift and Company, Duckwalls, Brown McDonald's and Mayo's. Mrs. Newell was a member of Clay Center United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Auxiliary and Navy Mothers.

She married Loyall "Tinner" Newell Sr. in Jan. 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990, a daughter, Zola, five brothers, three sisters and a great grandson.

Bertha is fondly remembered for her devotion and interest in her family's activities. She delighted in following her grandkid's sporting events and was a life-long baseball fan. She never missed a chance to play Wahoo or Chinese checkers and was always game for a good time, like sledding down Pogue's Hill at the age of 72 with her granddaughter Darci!!

Each member of the family benefited from her sewing skills as well as her expertise in cooking and baking. Her old fashioned sugar cookies, pastries and homemade bread earned her rave reviews. As a worker she was diligent and efficient, as a mother, wife, and grandma she was faithful and sincere.

Her survivors include a son, Loyall Newell and wife Darlyene, and a daughter, Barbara Platoff and husband Dave, all of Clay Center; 6 grandchilden, Joe Newell, Greg Newell, Deborah Scyffer, Michael Platoff, Trent Platoff, and Darci Ihnen and 8 great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends as well as her extended Medicalodge family.
