Zola Audrey Newell
Zola Audrey Newell, daughter of Loyall and Bertha Newell, was born Nov. 11, 1929, at Clay Center. Shedied Oct. 31, 1956 and would have been 27 years of age, Nov. 11.

She attended the Clay Center City Schools, and was graduated from the Clay County Community High School in 1947. After graduating from high school, Miss Newell went to the Stewart Beauty School in Topeka, and practiced in Clay Center for a short time. Later, she returned to Topeka and worked for the Hall Lithographing Company for about seven years. On Nov. 7, 1955, she joined the U. S. Navy with her sister, Barbara Newell, and they took their boot training in Bainbridge, Md. After completing boot training they went to radioman school in Bainbridge, and graduated with high honors. In August, 1955, they were assigned to the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Fla., as radio seamen. She met her death in an automobile accident Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Pensacola, Fla.

Miss Newell was a member of the First Methodist Church of Clay Center and during her school days attended Sunday School regularly, and was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She took a great interest in school, and was active in the Ever 4-H Club, and always did more than was asked of her. She was a member of the Pratt-Slade Auxiliary and was color bearer No. 1 of the Fourth District Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies' Auxiliary.

She was always cheerful and looked on the bright side of life. Her greatest concern was for the welfare of her family.

She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyall Newell, Sr., her one sister, Barbara Newell; a brother, LoyallNewell and his wife Darlene; two nephews, Douglas and Gregory Newell; a niece, Deborah Newell, and many other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held, Monday afternoon, Nov. 5, with Chaplain Richard D. Cleaves of the U. S.Naval Base at Hutchinson and the Rev. Elmer L. Brooks in charge. The service was in the Methodist Church.

Mrs. Elmer Brooks played the organ and accompanied Mrs. R. U. McClenahan and Janice McClenahan, who sang, "Behold the Sunset" and "Good Night and Good Morning." Mert Schwensen, Jr., sang "The Lord's Prayer."

The body bearers from A.T.U. 614, Hutchinson were: B. Deerimwater, AD3, P. S. Ogle, AD2, J. F. Chapman, AT3, G. Leja, AM3, T. F. Conmy, AD3 and H. Presley, AA. The firing squad and buglers, directed by Lt. King, were from the Hutchinson Naval Base. Honorary pallbearers were: Elizabeth Fordyce, Joan Randle, Lorene Peterson, Coleen Beems, Joan Meenen and Glenda Carlson, all of Clay Center.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors.




Zola Newell Dies in Auto Accident
Word was received today by Mr. and Mrs. Loyall Newell Sr., of the death of their daughter, Zola Newell,who is stationed with the United States Navy at Pensacola, Fla. She was killed in an automobile accident.

She was one of two persons who drowned today when their automobile plunged through an open drawbridge near the Intra-Coastal canal near Pensacola. The other was Charles Edward Johnson, 31, also stationed at the Pensacola Naval Air Station.

County patrolman Roland Simmons said the car was traveling down the Gulf Beach Highway at about 60 miles an hour when it ran off the open bridge and fell into 23 feet of water. The bridge had been lifted to permit passage of an approaching towboat. Simmons said the signal arm was lowered and flashing signals were in operation. Skin divers recovered the bodies.

Miss Newell, who is 26, was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Clay Center. She attended the grade schools and Clay County Community High School. She was employed in Topeka until about a year ago when she and her sister, Barbara Newell, entered the service.

She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Newell, Sr., a brother, Loyall Newell, Jr. of Clay Center and the sister, Barbara Newell of Pensacola, Fla.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.



Zola Newell Services to be Held Monday
Funeral services for the late Miss Zola Newell, who was stationed with the Navy at Pensacola, Fla., will be held Monday afternoon at 2, in the First Methodist Church. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Respect calls will be Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 at the Mert Schwensen Funeral Parlor.
