Frank Rigel Dies Tuesday Evening
Frank Rigel, 89, aged father of George Rigel of the community south of Barnes, passed away at the Concordia Hospital Tuesday evening, April 10. Mr. rigel had recently suffered a broken hip and had been hospitalized since that time.

frankrigelobitpic.jpg - 8366 Bytes Funeral services were held from the Youngberg Funeral Home at Waterville Saturday afternoon. April 14 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. O.J. Rundus, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Blue Rapids, was in charge.

Dan Nanninga, Mrs. Elmer Brn, Mrs. Walter Moore and Home Oberhelman of the Barnes Methodist church sang, "At the End of the Road", "Gods Tomorrow" and "Gathering Home". Mrs. Oberhelman was the accompanist.

Pall bearers were Fred Brown, Vic Kruse, Herman Doerr, C.P. Bolejack, Elmer Mann of Waterville and Harry Hill of Blue Rapids. Internment was in the Maplewood cemetery at Barnes.

One son, Emil, was not able to attend. A veteran of World War I , he has been a semi-invalid for a number of years.

Following is his life history:
Frank Rigel, eldest son of Wencil and Mary Rigel was born July 8th, 1861, at Ely, Iowa and passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital, Concordia, Kansas on April 10, 1951 at the age of 89 years, 9 months and two days.

On January 1, 1886, he was united in marriage to Lydia Smercheck of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Leaving Iowa they moved to a farm north of Barnes, Kansas. There they resided a few years and later moved to the present location southeast of Barnes.

To this union were born five sons: Albin of Riley, Kansas; Emil and Leonard of Blue Rapids, George of Barnes and one son dying in infancy. His wife preceded him in death on April 21st, 1920.

He continued to reside on the farm the rest of his life with his son George and family.

He is survived by his four sons, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Huderlik of Hollywood, California and Mrs Mary Vaverka of Shueyville, Iowa.

Two brothers preceded him in death while another brother Anthony of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away on April 12, 1951 just two days later.

Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral services for Frank Rigel were his son Albin Rigel and wife of Riley, Kansas; Elmer Rigel, LaJunta, Colorado; Mrs. Lloyd Baker, Junction City; Mr. and Mrs. Milo Rigel of Green, and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Nemechek of Humboldt, Nebraska; Mr. Harry Landis, Miss Ruth Landis, Miss Clara Landis and Mrs. Wm. Roller all of Topeka; Mrs. Emil Rigel and son Kenneth and Leonard Rigel of Blue Rapids.
